iPhone 5- Does a lot. But does it do enough?

With the launch of the latest iteration of the Iphone (formally known as Iphone 5), Apple is planning to take the war right to the home turf of Samsung and Google Inc. This newest generation of the Iphone has many new path breaking innovations such as an A6 processor which is reputed to be twice as fast as its previous generation A5 Chip. In terms of hardware- it will have 3 microphones and a 8 megapixel camera which is compatible with panaromic views. The battery life of the phone has also been enhanced and tests prove that the Iphone 5 can support 8 hours of 4G web Browsing.

The latest generation of the Iphone is shipped with new “EarPods” audiophones which have been designed after digitally scanning hundreds of human ears. The phone is also launched with the latest iteration of its mobile operating system; IOS 6. In terms of software advancements,  the package includes voice navigation for driving as well as an application called a “Passbook” for storing sensitive electronic information. The much hyped Siri has been completely revamped. It is now more interactive and can understand the needs of the users in a more efficient manner.

The new Iphone is 18 percent thinner than the older Iphone 4S. It is also 20 percent lighter than its older version. However the Retina Display has expanded to 4 inches from the 3.5 inches in its previous interation. The total resolution although remains the same at 326 pixels per inch. Available in three models- all of which come in black & white- it comes in sizes of 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. The phone will support 4G LTE networks in addition to the current GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO and HSPA Data networks.

In terms of looks- Apple has replaced the back end of the phone which was predominantly composed of glass with one which is mostly metal. This may actually be a good move as a lot of owners had a tendency to accidentally drop their phones. NFC is unfortunately still missing from the phone- even though GPS and 802.11 a/b/g Wi-fi should be useful to the user. The new longer screen allows for an extra set of icons to be displayed which is indeed a boon for the users who use it to the max.

A bit of bad news- there is a new dock connector officially known as “Lightning” which will immediately render obsolete the connector pins of the earlier generations. Also this new Iphone 5 may not be compatible with the existing Sim Cars- which will mean that users will have to move to new micro sim cards issued by the operators.

Apple took this opportunity to unview the iTunes store with a new design and a revamped look. It will come with iCloud integration and Facebook ‘likes’ to boost traffic to Apple’s own App store.
The new Iphone promises to live up to the hype- both for the good reasons and the bad. But will it actually generate envy from the Android users? Only time will tell….
